Honolulu City Council Expands Smoking Ban in Public Places Jul 23rd 2013, 17:17

The Honolulu City Council has passed an ordinance that expands its smoking ban “in certain places” to include most areas in business establishments, effective Jan. 1, 2014. Those businesses include hotels (except within guestrooms), retail stores, bars within enclosed or partially enclosed food courts, and restaurants, except in separate, open-air areas.

In addition, the ordinance bans smoking at the Honolulu Zoo, the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, the Koko Crater Botanical Garden, the Waikiki Shell, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku Beach Park, Kapiolani Beach Park, Kapiolani Park Beach Center, Kapiolani Park, Kuhio Beach Park and Sandy Beach Park except in designated areas.

Additional non-smoking areas will include elevators in buildings generally open to and used by the public; public areas and patient rooms in health care facilities; cinemas and theaters; museums, libraries and galleries; and most city-owned or controlled buildings.
